Freshers Party 2010

The freshers to various courses of 2010 batch were given a formal welcome party on Saturday, 25th September, 2010 at the times business school campus.

Held on the rooftop of the campus, the event started in the evening sunset with Shashank and Kushambi hosting the program. Miss Gunjan began with the Vandana, after which the evening of music and fun continued.  

Next was a surprising and entertaining impersonation of Prof.Hans given by Shashank which was enjoyed by all present...and those that saw the video later....I must add. Joheb also once again entertained us with his amazing talent for shayari.

Then came the most awaited round ......the Competition for Mr. and Ms. Fresher title. After discovering that there were quite a few talented dancers and singers in the new batch, the performers had to be short listed to a selected few who were outstanding. There were 3 rounds First the introduction round, 2^nd the Show your talent round and 3^rd the  Questions and Answers round.

Ultimately it was Mr.Aishwarya Shah and Ms.Kritika Pradhan who proved that they had the right moves to make them the winners.

Last came the long awaited jam session which was enjoyed by both seniors and juniors alike and the dj played on and on for hrs....

Times Business School on Delhi Metro Route

The tbs staff were pleasantly surprised last week as we rushed out to see the metro train on trial runs from lajpat Nagar to Nehru Place. The Delhi Metro had extended the trial runs on the Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor from Nehru Place to Okhla stations and the line would be launched  by this month-end. So by 30th September, the students of tbs would be connected to the rest of Delhi by the super-fast metro network. So no more traffic jams, no traveling hassles and no more buses or autos..

The new Violet Line would have to be changed at Central Secretariat and would have the following stops: Khan Market, Lodhi Colony,Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Lajpat Nagar, Moolchand, Kailash Colony,Nehru Place, Kalkaji, Okhla, Jasola,Sarita Vihar,Mohan Estate, Tughlakabad, Badarpur. 

So now if you want to shop at GIP in Noida, eat at C.P.  or just hang out at Lajpat nagar, it would be just minutes away....chill-out time is coming up guys!...

Farewell of MBA 2008 Batch

Times Business School wished the MBA 08 Batch Students Adieu on Monday, at the Intercontinental Grand at Nehru Place.

As per the dress code the guys were in black and the ladies were in red...though there were a few rebels in blues and whites as well...

The function started at 8pm sharp and began with prayers and the lighting of the lamp.This was followed by an interaction with the audience present. The Faculty and staff were in for a bit of a surprise as they were part of a well coordinated game to make them dance, sing or just to entertain...

Mr.and Ms.MBA titles were given to  the students along with other titles.

All departed after a delicious dinner, with a bit of sadness in one's hearts for the MBA's leaving us .....but high hopes for all their future endeavors......

International Woman’s Day

8th March, 2010 being International Woman’s Day was a day of awareness for us as we visited the Panel Discussion function of the United Nations Development Programme. At the venue the former Prime Minister of New Zealand and UNDP Administrator Helen Clark presented the “Report: Power, Voice and Rights: A Turning Point for Gender Equality in Asia and the Pacific. This has been one of the most detailed reports to be presented 10 year after the MDG’s were declared by the United Nations.

Ms.Helen Clark said at the venue that “Empowering women is vital for achieving development goals overall, and for boosting economic growth and sustainable development,” “Policy needs to advance gender equality, so that women as well as men can benefit from job creation and investments in social infrastructure,” she said.

The Report focuses on three key areas — economic power, political decision-making and legal rights. The report strives to analyze what holds women back, and how policies and attitudes can be changed to foster a climb toward gender equality. Asia, the Report asserts, is standing at a cross-road and by putting the right policies in place now, countries in the region can achieve positive change.

At the event an empowered woman Sarpanch Naurki Bai spoke of her struggles in achieving political power in her village whereby she gained the support of the entire village and neighboring villages, without bribing men with ‘daru’.

Another woman who stated that she was HIV positive spoke of how she would continue to be empowered no matter how much stigma would be directed towards her.

Dr.Syeda Hameed, Member Planning Commission spoke about the women’s struggle for 33% reservation in Parliament and further spoke about the various obstacles in the path of women’s development.
She also spoke about empowerment by quoting from the sufi texts which were truly suited the moment:

Don't walk around with an empty bucket.
You have a channel into the Ocean, and yet
You ask for water from a little pool.
There is a basket of fresh bread on your head,
and yet you go door to door asking for crusts.
Knock on your inner door. No other.
Sloshing knee-deep in fresh river water, yet
you keep wanting a drink from other people's water bags.
Water is everywhere around you, but you only see
Barriers that keep you from water.

Being part of this function was quite a good learning experience and definitely more tbsians should be part of such activities in the future.

JIM CORBETT NATIONAL PARK

Jim Corbett National Park lies in the Nainital, Pauri Garwhal and Bijnore Districts of Uttaranchal.

The present area of the Reserve is 1318.54 sq. km. including 520 sq. km. of core area and 797.72 sq. km. of buffer area. The core area forms the Jim Corbett National Park while the buffer contains reserve forests (496.54 sq.km.) as well as the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary (301.18 sq.km.)


The core is bounded to the North by the Kanda Ridge, with a height of 1043 m at its highest point. The entire area of the reserve is mountainous and falls in the Shivalik and Outer Himalaya geological region. It forms the catchment area of the Ramganga, a tributary of the Ganga.

The Ramganga flows from East to West in the reserve through landscapes of incredible beauty. Dammed at Kalagarh at the south-western end of the reserve in 1974. The reservoir created, submerged 40-sq. km. of prime grassland. The area on the western side of the reservoir now constitutes the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary.

After India attained independence in 1947 the park was renamed as Ramganga National Park. In 1956, it was renamed as Jim Corbett National Park, in memory of Jim Corbett. Project Tiger, India's ambitious conservation program to save the tiger and its habitat was launched from Corbett in 1973.

CAT Examination looses value

The latest Press release issued by IIM Ahmedabad today has announced that the “CAT 2009 result declaration has been deferred to end of February 2010”. Many of the CAT 2009 test takers were expecting the results to come out either today or tomorrow, as the IIMs had earlier announced that the results would be declared by the third week of February 2010.

This delay and uncertainty is raising the anxiety level of the CAT 2009 candidates. Thus many MBA aspirants are this year considering the MAT or the Management Aptitude Test and not the Common Admission Test to get admission in some of the top management institutes.

The MAT exam is held four times a year and is quite convenient to prepare for. Those who took the MAT exam in December were given their results within a month’s time. The results of the CAT exam though conducted in the same month have been delayed by yet another week…..So the results would be declared even after the next MAT....that is the February MAT results come out.

Due to this delay of the CAT results many MBA aspirants who have quit their jobs may have to take admission on the basis of scores of either the December or the upcoming February MAT results. The chaos that marked CAT online exams prompted many to not wait for the results, but to look for other opportunities.

Due to the failure of the online CAT there are also reports coming in that some non-IIM colleges are not considering CAT scores too seriously. This entire tedious process of the CAT 2009 has led to change of plans among many MBA aspirants. Those who thought of taking CAT next year are now apprehensive due to the unsatisfactory turn of events. They are now considering the MAT exam and other entrance tests to a greater extent. The CAT may finally be loosing its status as the ultimate MBA entrance test.

A.R.Rahman Wins Two Grammy Awards

A.R.Rahman has won two Grammy Awards, isn’t that quite an achievement. It’s not unbelievable though, considering what a big hit the movie, Slumdog Millionaire was and the Oscars Slumdog won last year. The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards was held in Los Angeles on Sunday night, and in India it has been quite a pleasant surprise to us on Monday morning. This is the first time Rahman has been nominated for a Grammy. He now joins other Indian music greats like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir Jussain, Vikku Vinayak and Vishvamohan Bhatt who have won Grammy Awards in the past.

He has won the award for ‘Jai Ho’ (From Slumdog Millionaire) for Best Song Written For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media beating ‘The Wrestler’ (From The Wrestler) written by the boss, Bruce Springsteen himself, ‘Decode’ (From Twilight), ‘All Is Love’ (From Where The Wild Things Are) and ‘Once In A Lifetime’ (From Cadillac Records). “Jai ho” has been sung by Sukhvinder Singh, Tanvi Shah, Mahalaxmi Iyer, Vijay Prakash and Rahman himself.

The other Award won by Rehman is for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album For Motion Picture, Television Or Other Visual Media for Slumdog Millionaire, beating the others: Cadillac Records, Quentin Tarantino's Inglorious Basterds, True Blood and the Twilight.
This is what he had to say on being handed the Grammy: "Insane, eh? I never even dreamt about winning all these awards. Apple iPad features

As we know the much Awaited Apple iPad has been launched. It has been priced at a much lesser amount than previously thought. Being $499 for the entry-level 16GB model, the price has been far less than the $999 price tag that many had predicted. Also available is a 32GB version for $599, while the 64GB flavor will cost you $699. The following are some of the features of the iPad.

Burj Khalifa - Height of Human Achivement

Did anyone watch the opening ceremony of the Burj Khalifa....It was simply amazing.





Take a look at these pictures, this building is one of the best man made achievements of the century.

Soaring 2,717ft into the air above Dubai and with 1,292,500 sq ft of glass to keep spic and span, the £1billion Burj Khalifa presented a unique problem for the maintenance staff.

Dale Harding, the general manager of window cleaning company Cox Gomyl, said the firm installed £5million of hi-tech equipment, including unique window-cleaning carousels which they designed, to ensure the Burj Khalifa looks its best.

Twelve machines weighing 13 tons carry up to 36 cleaners, who use ordinary soapy water to wash down the Burj's 24,830 reflective windows in a process that takes three months from top to bottom.

The cleaners stand on the specially designed machines, which emerge from cavities in the skyscraper and track along rails skirting its curved towers.

Avatar - Great Movie!

Has anyone seen the new movie, called Avatar....it is just too amazing....with all the special effects and all. Initially I went to watch it just because everyone was going to see it....so I thought that it had to be something good otherwise why are people going for it. True it is a futurist movie with androids and aliens but somehow it is a very heartening movie. It is all about a marine who wins the hearts of the native creatures of the planet Pandora through the avatar he is given. The animated scenes are stunning and quite amazing. Anyone who has never watched animated movies....this is a place to start....go and watch Avatar it is great!

Santa visits tbs!

All tbsians were in for a suprise as Santa took rounds of the Times Business School campus on Christmas Eve.

Spreading Christmas cheer, Santa went from classroom to classroom distibuting sweets and goodies.....thanks for the sweets Santa!

SIZZLING DAY 2

Day 2 of Times Business Schools, SIZZLERS had much more in store for the students of tbs.......

SPORTS ROUNDZ
beginning with the sports finals events, the winners were declared for each of the events. Ashish of BBA 3rd Sem and Riddhi of BBA 3rd Sem walked away winners of the male and female table tennis events. The winner of the Carrom and Pool were also declared. The arm wrestling event was the coolest event and the winner was tbs's newest Pehelwan Praveen of BBA 1st Sem. Siddhart, Yatin and Eshan great going!

TUG-O-WAR!
...But the most awaited and most exciting sporting event was the Tug-of-War Event. At 3 pm a gang of tbsians proceeded to the Kailash Colony Park armed with just a rope and enthusiasm. The teams were divided according to the courses and years....and ultimately it was the students of BBA 3rd Semester who won the event on the day.

ROCK PERFORMANCE!
Anushka looked amazing MC-ing as she introduced TBS's rockstars Amar and MS who gave renditions of some of the most popular western and bollywood numbers. On popular demand Alok Sir, Prasonjit Sir, Abhishek Sir, were called on stage for dance and singing performances....we did not know about your hidden talents!

PRIZE DISTRIBUTION
The prizes were distributed to all the winners of the sports and other events held during the fest days. Since the BBA 3rd Sem students walked away with most of the trophies of individual events they were declared the winners of the tbs trophy for Sizzlers 2009, great going guys!....

Fashion Event
.....the ramp sizzled as the fashion show themed ' hell to heaven' began on the tbs terrace.
The costumes were amazing......the students presented rounds of Casual wear, Traditional wear, Formal wear. Ultimately it was the heaven round after which the event was concluded.....great going Ananya and Abhijeet .....participants you were amazing.

SIZZLING DJ
....The students then danced like crazy as the DJ played some of the most rocking numbers. ...Joheb of MBA 1st Sem was given a special prize for his impromptu shairyi performance at the one-min-2-fame event..... Even the teachers and staff of tbs were pulled on to the danced floor and the music played till the neighborhood could not take it anymore.

....TBSIANS did u enjoy.....should SIZZLERS B there every year! Meenakshi Mam and I had a great time helping you guys out.

The Students of Times Business School had a sizzling time as the first ever fest sizzlers happened at tbs. The stage was set and the students waited enthusiastically for the start of the event.

The inaugural ceremony was hosted by our very own Siddharta Das, who welcomed Ms.Aakriti Beri, Knowledge Manager, Human Capital Division, and Ms.Vibha Lakhera, Academics to initiate the function.

The first event of the day was the 'one Minute to Fame' event that had a number of great performances from students from all courses and of all years. These performances ranged from dancers, poets, classical vocalists, and even a surprising show of strength by a karate display by our very own Riddhi. The judges were Ms.Beri, Ms. Lakhera and Mr.Alok who were to decide the winners.

Ultimately it was Prateek Lal who also entertained with poetry who came in first place and in second place was Jyoti, who danced to ganesh hegde main deewana . Third place went to Praveen who sang melodiously. Amar though seemed to be the crowd favorite as everyone demanded for an encore.

And then......lunch was served ....delicious noodles, fried rice, momos, bhel puri, papadi, etc was enjoyed thoroughly by the students.

The sports events continued and the semi-finals were held of the pool, table tennis and carrom events.

At 2pm sharp, the students gathered for the Treasure Hunt, which was one of the most awaited events at the fest SIZZLERS. This was one of the most exhausting and the most interesting events ever held at tbs.
